dbHMS is a Chicago based MEP/FP design engineering firm. We are seeking a highly motivated part-time interns for our Chicago office. The candidate should be a specialist in their area of expertise but a generalist in the building construction industry.
dbHMS creates concepts for building systems in collaboration with architects and owners through the phases of design and construction. Our desi...gns focus on first principles and understanding of human comfort and the environment to deliver approaches that minimize energy use and integrate building architecture with building systems. Our team includes engineers, lighting designers, architects, building commissioning agents and construction managers.
Commissioning of Building Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems is an exploding field. It is fueled by changes in the Energy codes and the proliferation of green-building certifications. dbHMS seeks bright practical-oriented engineering students with a strong interest in mechanical systems in buildings. Every building is a prototype, never assembled before, that needs to be tested to see if it functions as the designers and owner intended. Commissioning is the process of monitoring the design as it evolves and then testing the as-built equipment. It takes someone who is part design engineer, part experimental scientist, and part detective. There is office work reviewing drawings and writing test procedures and there is field work, sometimes in rough conditions, putting the equipment through it’s paces and recording the results. Commissioning interns need to have an inquisitive nature, the patience to work with contractors and field technicians with different priorities, and the persistence to find a correct solution. The majority of the work involves HVAC equipment, including the digital Building Automation Systems that control it. But we also confirm the functioning of other systems such as lighting controls, water heaters, and uninterrupted electrical power. Essential Job Functions • Apply knowledge of engineering to understanding practical systems for delivering air and water to move energy in buildings. • Learn to read and understand construction documents, floor plans, specifications and equipment spec sheets. • Think logically to understand sequences of events in control equipment and spot problems that will prevent proper operation. • Conduct site work in buildings under construction.
Requirements • Minimum Education: Involved in some education program related to Engineering or Information Technology. • Work Locations: Chicago, Illinois or Grand Rapids, Michigan Additional Preferred Qualifications: • Basic familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook so as to perform office functions. • Practical hands-on experience around tools and electrical devices. • Some previous experience Other Skills/Abilities • Ability to multi-task by working on multiple overlapping projects with long time lines. • Verbal and written communication skills in English to maintain professional, polite and prompt communication with clients. • Motivated self-starter and fast learner committed to learning on the job. • An interest in Commissioning, Energy Auditing, or building design as a career.
